Can I put Hanging File Folders In With My Material To Be Shredded?

The hanging folder has metal hooks on all four corners that slide over a rail. Hanging folders can be used to file one or more manila folders or can be used to put loose sheets directly into the hanging folders, themselves.

When documents need to be retrieved, the corresponding manila folder or paper is removed from the hanging folder, leaving hanging folder, itself, in its place on the rails.
Hanging file folders are made from a heavier cardstock-type paper material, which is widely accepted at most, if not all, commercial shredding companies. The metal in hanging file folders is what causes concern with regard to personal and commercial shredding.

Metal components of any material to be shredded can cause the knives of the shredder to become dull or even clogged with material, leading to complete failure of the entire mechanism.

When compiling items to be shredded with either a personal shredder or with a professional shredding service, it is best to make sure that it is free of any type of material that isn’t paper or a paper-like substance. If it is unavoidable, please contact your local professional shredding service to see if their processes are able to accommodate such materials as the small amounts of metal in hanging file folders.
